It’s the holiday season. A time that’s supposed to be joyful, but often feels very overwhelming. And for many mothers and entrepreneurs, it’s really a time of huge pressure. You want to excel at work, create magical moments for your family and stay on top of everything, but trying to do it all and trying to meet everyone’s expectations can leave you exhausted, overloaded and questioning how to make it all work. And here’s the problem, this do-it-all all mindset combined with perfectionism and the pressure to create perfect holiday experiences makes our holidays feel more stressful than Mary and in this very first solo episode of the peaceful productivity pod, we’ll explore how to prioritize, set realistic expectations, shift away from time scarcity and create space For what truly matters. During this busy but very special season of the year.
Welcome to the peaceful productivity pod. I’m your host, Anne Rajoo, and together we redefine productivity and find your sweet spot where performance meets happiness.
I don’t know about you, but I have quite a mixed relationship with the Christmas season. I lived abroad now for more than half of my life, and for many, many years, I try to recreate Christmas as I knew it back in Germany. So, if you get a chance to visit Germany during the Christmas season, do it, it’s just truly magical. And so I have lots of really beautiful Christmas childhood memories, and I wanted to create those for my children. So I would plan and prepare and decorate and cook and shop and everything else and try to make it just really special. And at the same time, I would get incredibly frustrated with myself, because Christmas on a tropical island is just not like Christmas in Germany and cooking a big Christmas roast for like, two days and very humid, 33 degrees plus, or for those friends over there on the other side of the of the planet, 90 plus Fahrenheit is just not fun, and it never tasted as good as it tasted in my memories. And that’s probably not because I’m a terrible cook, but because I wouldn’t be able to get certain ingredients here.
And so I got really fed up. I got really annoyed with Christmas and eventually, I decided I am not cooking a typical Christmas dinner or Christmas lunch. I’m cooking something different every year, so I don’t have the expectation that it’s supposed to taste a certain way. It will still be special, but I can now adjust it based on what’s available locally and what’s in season. And that took away a lot of pressure. And eventually, I took this idea, or this thought, of really removing the pressure and the stress from my Christmas season into different aspects of what I would normally do, and so I have reimagined my holiday season, and it’s now much less stressful and much more peaceful. And today I want to share with you four things that we can all stop to have a more peaceful and productive Christmas season.
So, the first thing I would love for everyone to stop is to do it all. Many moms and entrepreneurs feel a very strong obligation to meet both family and business expectations, and that often leads us to feeling overwhelmed. We’ve got a very busy schedule during this time of the year and trying to excel at both business and family at the same time and trying to meet everyone’s expectations just leaves us very, very tired and stressed and at the end of the day, mostly, we don’t take care of our own needs in these few weeks of the year. So I would love for you to prioritize or to identify two to maximum free essential tasks daily that contribute to your goals for the end of the year. If you have business goals, they contribute to those. If you have certain family goals in terms of how you want to feel during your holiday season, these tasks and daily activities should contribute to those. So focus on completing these two to three essential things and just leave the rest. We do not have to do it all.
The second item I would love for everyone to stop is perfectionism and the pressure to create this truly magical experience. We often have a belief that the holiday season should be perfect for our family, and that we have this pressure of creating idolized experiences and an idolized standard that very honestly, a lot of media and marketing campaigns have put on us, which quite frankly, we might not even need. I think our family is very happy with moms and women in their life who are really present, who. Enjoy themselves during this season, and who don’t stress themselves about creating all these fantastic experiences for everyone. I would love for you to check in with yourself. Where are you holding unrealistic expectations on yourself, and where are you trying to be really perfect? Where are you putting a lot of pressure on yourself to create something that maybe would be just as good or maybe even better if it was less perfect, if it was less curated and less prepared if maybe there were some more flexibilities and just more ease for yourself and the rest of your family.
The third item I would love for you to stop is a scarcity mindset around time. S,o for many of us, it’s obviously a very busy period. There are more things on our schedules, social engagements and commitments, family visits, preparing, you know the food shopping, the Christmas shopping, you know it. But at the same time, it just doesn’t help us. If we sit here and we get frustrated or feel guilty about the lack of time. We feel guilty that we’ve got things to do in our business and we might not be able to do them because there are other commitments that might have priority, or we feel like we’re falling behind. And while it’s a true experience, and I get that very much, because we’ve got long holidays over here, school holidays because it’s our summer period. So schools are off for, I think, six, eight weeks, even more, I’m not even sure, but it’s really it’s a true experience. But it doesn’t help if we sit here and we wonder, Oh, what you know, how can I optimize my time, and how can I do more things this Christmas season? What I would love for everyone is to take this period of the year, slow down, recharge, and really consider that the time off is an investment because when we are refreshed and recharged, we can come back in 2025 with increased productivity and more creativity, and this can really just be helpful, isn’t it? So I would love for you to stop the scarcity mindset around time.
And the last part, I would everyone to stop worrying about missed opportunities. Yes, there might be things coming around that sound incredible and that you would really love to do, but it might not be the right time of the year, because, obviously, there are other things going on. I would normally be the first one to say yes to everything because I would be worried about missing out on opportunities. But also I truly believe now that we can say no to opportunities because they might create room for other opportunities that we don’t even have an idea about, or we could say no to an opportunity but think about finding a way to still benefit from this opportunity, maybe at a later point in time when our schedule is more aligned. Just because something knocks on our door we don’t have to open and we don’t have to say yes, we will still be able to create opportunities in the new year, and maybe we would feel then less stressed and more ready and more focused to make even better use of these opportunities.
Okay, so these are the four things that I would everyone would love for everyone to stop this Christmas season. We don’t need to do it all. Prioritize only on two to three essential tasks, stop perfectionism and extreme pressure on getting it magical this year, and set realistic expectations and create some flexibility and room for just ease and joy and fun, then not thinking about the lack of time, as much as the investment of your time into your recharge, into your recovery and as an investment for the new year. And then opportunities might not be missed. They might turn into other opportunities, or they might come around again next year.
So I hope you enjoyed these four tips for a more peaceful and productive Christmas season.
And if you’re worried about your you know, level of productivity this Christmas season, I would invite you to book a mini productivity audit. It’s a complimentary 30-minute call, and I’m opening my schedule for 2025 for the peaceful productivity audit. So we can take this time to check about what’s what truly matters for you, where you might be blocked, how you could maybe shift around a few things to feel more peaceful and productive this Christmas season, and then to dive right into 2025 with energy and a clear and productive mind.
So thank you so much for listening, and I hope you enjoyed this very first solo episode. It’s been a little bit strange to record myself talking for this long but hopefully I’ve done a good job, and I would love for you to leave a review and rate the podcast and help me spread the word that productivity. Doesn’t have to be all hustle and grind. It can be peaceful and joyful.
And next week, I’ve got the lovely Laura Kline Taylor on the podcast, and we’ll be talking about integrating motherhood and leadership, because in the corporate world, we often have pressure on women to separate their roles as mothers and individuals from their professional life, and that creates a disconnect, and Laura shares some really beautiful, feminine perspectives that we can bring to our leadership to be more authentic and more effective in our professional roles.
That’s all coming next week. Stay tuned, and until then, be peacefully productive and I catch you next time!
