Traditional goal setting often emphasizes rigid structures, external benchmarks and perfectionism. Traditional goal setting often has us chasing ambitious shiny objects rather than including mindful reflection to ensure that everything we do contributes to our core objectives. It’s the cause of misaligned goals that, in fact, is a huge cause of burnout and wasted time, wasted energy and simply frustration. There is a quote that I love very much, but can’t remember who it’s from “Burnout isn’t from doing too much, it’s from not doing enough of what we love”.
So in this episode, I dive into replacing traditional goal setting with mindful goal setting to achieve Peaceful Productivity by grounding your goals and purpose focus on personal alignment, emphasizing progress over perfection and tapping into creative flexibility with a harmonious approach that prioritizes well-being alongside your achievement.
Welcome to the Peaceful Productivity Pod. I’m your host Anne Rajoo, and together we redefine productivity and find your sweet spot where performance meets happiness.
Goal setting is such an integral part of starting the new year. This week, we are blending the structure of SMART goals with the mindfulness of Peaceful Productivity to create a balanced and purposeful approach to achieving your aspirations. And listen to the end, because I have a very special New Year’s gift for you.
So traditional goal setting often focuses on specific outcomes without considering the sustainability of the process. It prioritizes results over well-being, which can leave us feeling stuck and disconnected. I’ve been there myself. I’ve set goals in the past, big ones and didn’t achieve them. For example, I announced about two times that I would be launching a podcast, but I didn’t follow through. No one complained or called me out, luckily, but I felt like I had failed. That sense of disappointment was really tough to carry, yet over the last couple of years, when I sprinkled in the unique flavour of Peaceful Productivity, I not only hit more of my goals, but also felt a deeper sense of alignment and peace.
Let’s redefine what goal setting can look like with mindful, SMART goals. I’m pretty sure you know what smart goals stand for, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound – SMART. So now let’s add a mindful approach, and if you can, now is a good time to grab a pen and paper, or if you can’t, come back to the episode, maybe a little bit later and take a few minutes to work on your goal setting. Or if you already have created your goals for 2025 maybe it’s an idea to review them and see how you can sprinkle in some mindfulness.
So when we set mindful SMART goals, we start with specific and the idea of specific and mindful SMART goals is that we want to ground your goal in purpose. When setting a specific goal in a mindful way, we can connect to your core values and vision. So ask yourself “Why does this goal matter to me on a deeper level?” For example, instead of saying “I want to grow my business”, reframe it to “I want to grow my business, I can spend more time with my family.”
Purpose drives motivation.
Then we move on to M for measurable. This is to emphasize progress over perfection when it comes to mindful goal setting. Track your progress in ways that feel rewarding. Celebrate small milestones. These really are the building blocks of lasting change. For example, if your goal is to feel more energized, you might measure it by journaling your daily energy levels, or noticing how often do you wake up feeling refreshed. Attach a reward to each milestone and celebrate your momentum and the progress.
Let me move on to A for achievable. Balance challenges with self-compassion. Yes, you do want to stretch yourself, and you do want to set ambitious goals and also remain realistic. Self-compassion is key to maintaining balance. Let’s say you want to start a new exercise routine. Instead of aiming for six days a week, immediately start with one or two days and build from there. When you think about your goal being achievable, think about the systems and habits you would need to have in place to create the consistent progress required to achieve this goal. For example, instead of setting an overwhelming goal like write a book, break it down into daily habits like writing for 15 minutes per day. Goals without systems often fail. Systems sustain momentum when your motivation dips.
Let’s move on to Rl four relevant. Ensure alignment with your inner harmony. It’s essential your goals align with your priorities, values and long term objectives. In this world of destruction and shiny objects, we can easily get derailed, and it is tempting to pursue more spontaneous ideas and other goals and follow trends, but often these don’t contribute to your overarching vision. So I encourage you to create space for mindful reflection when you set your goals for 2025 get intentional and filter out all the distractions that may turn your focus away from what truly matters. Ask yourself if your goals feel truly meaningful and if they are relevant to your current life circumstances aligning with your core values, passions and broader vision of your future. When a goal lacks this relevancy, it can leave you feeling unfulfilled or disconnected, even if you achieve it, reflecting deeply during the goal-setting process helps to ensure each objective serves a larger purpose.
Looking back, I realized that launching this podcast required me to do some essential inner work and build a better support system. These foundational steps weren’t just helpful, they were transformative, and they really ensured that this goal of having a podcast resonated with my values and really supported my overall vision for my business.
Now let’s move on to T for time-bound. We want to create a flexible timeline. Yes, deadlines are helpful, and they can often push us. I’m definitely one of those people who thrive with a little bit of pressure, but they shouldn’t box us in. We want to set timelines that allow for adjustment. If life throws a curve ball, maybe not if, when it does, for example, if your goal is to finish a course by March, give yourself the flexibility to extend that deadline if needed, ensuring progress remains steady without unnecessary pressure. So when I was preparing for my launch of the podcast, for example, I had to push my own deadline back twice. Yes, I could have pushed through, and I probably would have done so in the past, but I chose to prioritize flexibility and maintain a pace that felt aligned with my well-being and really my creative energy. Sometimes the best outcomes come from honouring the journey over the timeline.
So as you set your goals for the new year, remember to focus on progress, not perfection, align your aspirations with your values, and allow yourself grace to adapt along the way. Mindful goal setting isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what truly matters to you. I hope this mindful approach to goal setting inspired you to change or adapt the way you’re setting your goals and to create a more aligned and reflective process.
So I would love for you to share your goals with me, and as promised in the beginning, I have a little gift for you. I have the exciting opportunity for you to get support by bringing your goals to me, and I will offer you personalized feedback and help you clarify your vision, align your goals with what truly matters, and add some mindfulness to your goals. If you need support with that, what you would need to do simply is submit your goals through the form that I have linked in the show notes. Or you can join me on Instagram @_annerajoo_ and send me a message with the word “Goal”, and I will send you the link to the form. And for each submission, I will record a personalized feedback video just for you. This really is your chance to create powerful and peaceful goals for 2025 you really want, don’t want to miss this. It’s the first time I’m doing this, and it’s definitely for a limited time only.
And of course, I would love for you to come back next week because I will be talking about self-sabotage with Peggy Sullivan, a renowned speaker and archive of women’s empowerment, and she unpacks the hidden ways perfectionism and fear of imperfection that drive self-sabotage, tune in and discover how to shift from self-sabotage to self-empowerment. All this is coming next week.
Until then, stay peacefully productive and I catch you next time.
