"Mind Wandering" - the Productive Power to Let Your Thoughts Drift Freely
Have you ever noticed that your best ideas seem to pop up when least expecting them? It’s not a coincidence. Our minds thrive in moments of dissociation when we’re engaged in tasks that don’t require much conscious effort, like taking a shower, hiking, or doing the dishes.
The other day, my friend Michele from the UK visited, and we drove down to the national park. As we walked the rocky trails, surrounded by nature’s beauty, Michele remarked, “I already feel so much clarity. I need to make time to journal and write this down…” We hadn’t walked for long but Michele’s brain was working hard subconsciously while we were enjoying nature’s beauty. Her brain entered a state known as “mind wandering”, where our thoughts drift freely without the constraints of active focus.
During these moments, our brains are still processing information and making connections, but in a more relaxed and spontaneous manner. This state allows the brain to draw from a broader range of experiences, memories, and knowledge. Without the pressure of actively trying to solve a problem or generate ideas, our minds are free to explore unconventional pathways and make unexpected connections.
So, next time feel stuck or need inspiration, consider stepping away from your desk and engaging in a dissociated task. You might be surprised at the flood of ideas rushing in when you least expect them.
Small Losses Or Small Wins - Beat the Brain's Innate Negativity Bias
Ok… Dissociated tasks for the brain to wander. Sounds great!
But if you’re anything like me, doing “nothing” (showering, walking, sitting around, “mindless wandering”) doesn’t feel very productive, especially when you were meant to work on that project, finish that report, or send that email.
Guilt and shame creep up…
Thanks to the brain’s innate negativity bias, it’s easy to dwell on our shortcomings and losses.
But what if we shifted our focus to celebrate the small wins instead?
Grant yourself permission for mindless rest (the intentional practice of taking a break without engaging in purposeful activity) allowing the mind to relax and wander freely.
And if you fall into the trap of self-criticism or doom-scrolling, recognise that emotions are temporary signals and practice self-forgiveness by letting go of guilt and shame.
Find the win in every situation, no matter how small or unrelated to your work it may seem.
Didn’t hit that early morning workout? Celebrate the extra hour of sleep and the refreshed feeling it brings.
Didn’t finish that job application? Cherish the time spent with loved ones instead.
By moving past setbacks with self-compassion and re-focusing on the positives, we cultivate a mindset of resilience and progress.
Comparison Versus Inspiration - Your Source of Motivation and Learning
If been talking about social media a few times. So often we scroll through perfectly curated feeds, comparing our behind-the-scenes reality to someone else’s highlight reel.
This tendency often leads to self-criticism, feelings of inadequacy, and stifled creativity.
However, there’s another side to the coin: inspiration.
Rather than viewing others’ work as a benchmark for our own success, we can choose to see it as a source of inspiration. Seeing what others have achieved can spark new ideas, ignite our passion, and propel us forward on our creative journey.
